RE: How has everyone else's summer been?...

Pretty much camping in the back yard. Gas prices and the higher cost of everything else kind of cooled our fever. Probably just as well, we took one 6 day trip to Biloxi, Miss. and everything that could go wrong did. Since we've been home it has been one thing after another. Dishwasher and water heater died a couple of weeks ago and yesterday we just had new A.C. installed in the house. It was rather old and on it's last legs, so we decided to replace it now. Being retired bank accounts don't grow very fast, if at all, looks like maybe a few local trips after the weather cools off. I'm not realy crying but we do miss our usual 4 to 6 week trip. Maybe next year. There's always a chance that I'll win the Lotto, look out then, going for a class C and hitting the road. Jerry

RE: Here is a new twist!

Our T.T. is in our back yard, except when we are leaving soon on a trip. I have a lite chain and padlock around my battery box. I know it wouldn't stop a determined theif but it would slow them down. At least long enough for Mr. Smith and Wessson to show up. Several years ago some #@%&^%$# stole the battery out of my pickup on Xmas eve, because I neglected to lock the truck. We just returned from a few days in Biloxi, Mi. The CG we stayed at had FEMA people still there. The next to the last day there I seen one of the perm residents changing his propane tanks. He had them chained down, and I noticed all the perms did also. I am going to chain mine also, the cost of fuel is driving an increase in fuel thefts. It was not a good trip, but we had fun at the casinos and only left them about $100. Not bad for 4 days of fun. The CG was the only one available, but I understand the fema folks are being moved out soon. Rt 90 thru town is under cons't and an awful mess. We will not be going back there for some time to come. I-10 Mobile bay bridge and tunnel

We are considering going to Biloxi Ms. (Casinos) . I understand that using the tunnel with our T.T. is not a problem (propane). I've never tried it with the T.T. and am not looking forward to it as I don't like the tunnel anyway. Has the bay bridge been restored to 4 lanes? That also bothers me , it's long and I wonder about cross winds. Funny, most things about towing don't bother me but this combination does. I'd appreciate any info or comments in regards to this situation. Also would like to know about decent campgrounds in the area. I understand since Katrina some of them are not very nice, Info on these would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Jerry

RE: Bathroom door jam came loose

If it's rubbing on the opposite side the shims are to thick, often times the shims will not be the same thickness, on the top or bottom. If it's rubbing on the top the lower shim is to thick. If you can get the jamb to stay in the opening, use a nickle to get the right spacing between the oposite jamb and top of the door then you know how much to shim. Be patient and keep the coffee pot ready, when you get flustered just stop , have a cup and usually the problem will reveal it self. sometimes we stand to close and can't see the problem. I'd be glad to stop by and give you a hand but it's a long way. Good luck, Jerry

RE: Nice washing wand at Lowes

Sounds interesting, funny what we find in unlikely places and better quality too. Myself I use a Webbster brush on a painters pole. The webbster dries fast and can also be used as a brush or broom. I have noticed that websters vary in price from store to store and from place to place in the store. In either Home Depot or Lowes last summer I seen webbsters in the cleaning dept for $8 or $10 , in the pool supplies the same one was $15. Jerry

RE: Gas Prices Got You Down?

No long trip for us this year, besides gas prices everything else has gone up.The retirement checks don't go up proportionally. We've also had a run of bad luck $ wise and the travel $ had to be used. We'll just wonder around the state mostly. I'm hoping that after this crazy election is over with things will settle down. RE: Newby Looking for Folding Trailer Advise...

How about giving A-liner and Chalet a look. They are hard side fold downs. Our first was a Chalet and we loved it. Towed with a Nissan Pathfinder and got 17 mpg if I stayed under 60-65 mph. They set up and break down quickly and rain is not a problem. Jerry

RE: Florida in august.

We've lived here 30 years and Aug is not a good month. If you like the heat come on down!! If not, then I would suggest March or April. If you go anywhere where there is concrete it absorbs the heat, which makes it hotter!! Why does everyone want to go to Disney? There are plenty of things to do and see without the attractions that do not cost an arm and a leg! You do not need res or Aug, but I do suggest that you get them for the fall or winter months in advance. Hurricanes--we have plenty of warning for a hurricane; but it they have a mind of their own and can change direction at the last minute. Hope this helps, we sure do like company so come on down!! RE: Installing shelves in a travel trailer

The first thing to look for is evidence of fasteners that fasten the wall panels to the frame, mine are small staples, sometimes hard to find. Secondly try tapping the wall. The sound that tapping makes over a stud is different from the sound from an empty space. Being a retired carpenter I can do just as good locating studs with my knuckles. After finding what you are looking for if you want try drilling a very small hole to be sure. Drill where you can cover it up if possible, otherwise a very small hole is easily filled. Mark the drill bit with tape so you only drill 1/2" into the wall. I doubt that the wall panels are more than 1/4" thick. Go easy drilling, take your time, other wise Murphy will come by to help. You don't want his help, he's a screw up. I've put shelves in our trailer. Good luck, Jerry

Mice in the basement I think, now what?

Our Doxies have played under our T.T. for the 2 years we've had it, but a couple of weeks ago they were going crazy barking and trying to climb the tires. I went over to see, and they had pulled down some of the wiring and broke some of it. I was a little(?) mad and chased them off. The next day I put temp fence around it because they wouldn't stay away. They still tried to get in. I got to thinking there had to be a reason, they are good hunters and have killed numerous rats that made a home in a shed that I no longer have. I looked up under again and see that several places where wires penetrate the covering there are good sized openings. I set a trap and sure enough caught a mouse. Last nite I didn't get anything, but wonder have I gotten them all? If not now what. As soon as I fix or get the wires fixed I will foam all the openings. Has anyone figured out a way to know if they are no longer there. I sure don't want dead mouse odor in trailer. any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jerry

RE: Aliner towing question

We started out with a Chalet, very similar to Aliner, we looked at both. We pulled it with a Nissan Pathfinder V-6, no trany cooler, no problem. Electric brakes, YES, for sure, sway control we didn't have, no problem. The sway thing you just have to try, I'd start without it, take it up on 4 lane with tractor trailer traffic. We averaged 16-17 MPG. Trip from Fl to Wash. State, almost 9,000 Mi. traded in for small T.T. Sometimes wish we still had it. I'm sure you will greatly enjoy your Aliner. Jerry

RE: Experience w/Salem by Forest River

We bought a Salem 21' two years ago. Have been on two trips over 5,000 mi. and no major issues. We had a major water leak in a storage door but they replaced the whole door. It still leaked slightly but I did some modification at the sill area and problem solved. Last summer the valve on the toilet cracked. I unhooked the line and plugged it, used a small bucket to flush the rest of the trip. After thinking about it and taking a good look I realized that the valve broke because of stress caused by the water line being a wee bit short. I cut the line put in a shut off valve and a 90 degree elbow to free up the stress and it works fine now. It doesn't matter what you buy there will always be problems of some kind. We are VERY HAPPY with our rig, I'd say go for it. I had more trouble with the dealers service man than I did with forest river. I found a better place for service too and if I buy another rig it will be there, they are not a forest river dealer. Go for it. Jerry
